Recently I've been doing a lot of marriage counseling. I've seen and heard a lot of things and it ultimately comes down to a loss of self for the life of other. (Christ's Life in us is the only way this is possible!). One of the things that struck me through some of my conversations was the abuse that happens in marriages. Not only physical and emotional, but also spiritual. We use spiritual anecdotes to beat the other person into submission or prove a point. I'm guilty of the same thing.
After various encounters with different types of abuse , I never realized the implications of Romans 6-7. In it Paul describes how we were once married to this old guy named sin. Now I never saw this passage this way; but sin is not some nice guy who has our best interest. No on the contrary, he is an abusive, narcissistic spouse who only has his interest in mind. Not only that but he is in his own delusional world that blames me for his abuse. He does everything to make sure we're beat into submission and reminded that we' re as worthless as he tells us we are
Paul is genius in his way of getting this point across. He said we've died to this old lover and have a brand NEW Marriage with Christ! Now what I've been finding is that he is quite the lover and gentleman. He is patient and always has my best interests in mind. I can be bold and confident around Him and don't have to fear the abuse I've had with my old spouse sin.
Like I said I've never viewed sin as an abusive spouse. Sometimes I'll go back an flirt with the idea that it was better in that old abuse, because at least I knew what to expect. I had developed the coping skills to deal with it. With Christ, each day is new and exciting and I'm not sure what I'm going to experience of His love for me. What a weird dynamic. I've found so many people (myself included) settle for the known because the adventure of the unknown takes someone who will lovingly guide me. The healing process I've found in my own life, comes from realizing I'm dead to my old abusive spouse sin, and alive to Christ in a New marriage with Him. What's true of Him is true of me because, as in marriage, we've become one!!! You have a New Marriage
